The History Of Maltese
The word Maltese is believed to be a corruption of the word Melita,
which is the name of an island in the Atlantic Sea.
The beautiful Maltese dogs were spoken of
by such people as Callimachus the Elder,
who lived during 384 B.C. to322 B.C..
He and many others during this time
sang the praises of these tiny white toy dogs.
The Maltese date back to the pre-christian era
flourished in highly civilized areas &,
were referred to as "companions to ladies".
The exact date that the first Maltese arrived
in this country is unknown.
The Maltese breeds were imported by fanciers
before dog shows had began.
It is assumed that they came to the U.S. as early as 1850,
according to paintings.
An Interesting Note About Maltese
More than 300 years ago,
every once in a while,
the Indians & the Colonists would declare a one day truce
so that they could trade dogs & furs.
The Indians traded small sized dogs
known as "fleece" dogs or Indian dogs.
These dogs resembled the Maltese slightly due to their hair.
The Indians would use the hair of these dogs to weave with.
They wore garments made of the dogs hair.
